Getting horses ready for race day

Qualifications & Experience

Having done Pony Club for 7 years and still ongoing, I have done a lot of certificate work, in which I have achieved my B certificate. This is recognised worldwide and entitles me to be able to work in professional stables. Whilst I was sitting these certificates, I was also encouraged to instruct the younger kids at pony club, which I did for both ridden and horse mastership.

In 2014, I was hired as a working pupil at 3* Eventing Stable, Pioneer Sport Horses. This Stud has produced many top horses and ponies who are dominating both the Eventing and Show Jumping circuits. Two of the ponies they bred, Pioneer Jade and Pioneer High Jinx, are both sucessfully competing at 3* PGP. Pioneer Makokomiko has stayed with the stud and is currently competing at 3* Eventing, and Pioneer Brass Monkey is an up and coming horse of theres, who is currently competing at 2* Eventing. Whilst here, I rode a range of horses from young green horses to more experienced horses competing at the higher levels on the eventing circuit. I also received instruction which improved my riding futher and gave me more experience on a different variety of horses. I was also in charge of feeding, preparing horses for competition, working on the ground with horses up to the age of two (including colts) and exercising horses daily.

At the beginning of 2015 I began work at the Tauranga Racetrack. Having never worked in a racing environment before, this was all a bit different for me. I initially started as ground staff, which included tasks such as, mucking out stables, preparing all the horses for work, hosing off, etc. each horse after it has worked, taking horses in and out of the barn, feeding and covering horses, assisting at racedays and taking horses on and off the walker. I have recently begun riding a bit of trackwork about two or three times a week. This has further increased my experienced with off the track thoroughbreds.

I am also currently working on my level 3 stable management cerftificate and hope to complete this in the few months.
