Groundwork & Lunging

Jazz before...

...and after

My experience with groundwork and lunging started all the way back in 2008, when we bred our first lot of ponies. Although I was only 12 at the time, I was a huge part of the process. At first, I could only observe my parents doing most of the work, but by the time they were yearlings, I had taken over the reins and never looked back. This also meant that when we had our next lot of foals in 2013, I could do everything right from the word go. I taught these horses how to lead, lunge, tie up, ground manners, covered them for the first time, taught them to accept tack, and much more!

The next big learning curve I had with young horses was when I began work at Pioneer Sport horses. Here I was working with all the horses aged from 6 months to horses competitively competing on the eventing circuit, including colts. Again, here I taught horses how to lead and lunge, accept weight and tack on their backs and general everyday care of them. This furthered the knowledge I had and helped me to better understand the breaking in and training process.

This leads me to the present day, where I am working at the racetrack. Here, I am dealing with yearlings and young horses daily. I am involved in teaching them ground manners and accepting the weight of tack and covers on their backs. Alongside the trainer, I am gathering more and more knowledge every day that will only help to increase my skill level in the future.
